| "I’ve got this sitter I call for Bunny. She kinda freaks me out, but… Well, Bunny’s safe. She’s really, really safe.”—Hunter Mistilteinn Name: She goes by Ali Cipes, but anyone who knows her true age can guess it’s not the name she was born with. Nickname: None. Age: Though she appears to be 16, Ali is actually somewhere around 3,500 years old, as she was born about three hundred years before the Trojan War. Gender: Female Sexuality: Straight, for what little it’s worth. Personality: Ali tends to be extremely guarded, especially around men. She has a more fun-loving side, but she usually only shows it around friends, of whom she has few—she’s watched too many mortal lives pass to put much effort into relationships with others. Even when she’s at her loosest, Ali tends to come off as excessively formal due to her incredible age; language changes faster than she does. Looks: By modern standards, Ali is positively diminutive at 4’8—a good height for the time and place of her birth, but no longer, pun intended. Her features, unsurprisingly, are classically Greek, with dark eyes, wavy black hair, and olive skin, making her look somewhat like an ancient statue brought to life. Most striking are her eyes: in them you can see the weight of thousands of years of life, in all their crushing intensity. Divine Parent: Ares Powers: Ali has the ability to instinctively find the deadliest possible use for any item, as well as to make miscellaneous objects perform better as weapons when she wields them. She also has the immortality and enhanced physical prowess of a Hunter of Artemis. Backstory: Ali herself rarely speaks of own history, and indeed there is little to connect her to it. She carries nothing with her but memories, and leaves behind nothing but the same. Those close to her, who know who she really is, do her the kindness of not speaking of it either. What is generally known is that she was born somewhere in Greece shortly after the end of the Titanomachy and that she was one of the earliest Hunters of Artemis alongside the likes of Callisto. Any sort of attempt to catalogue the rest of Ali’s extensive history is doomed to be woefully incomplete, but the broad strokes are as follows. In the Trojan War, Ali fought on the side of Troy. After the city fell, Ali was rescued from the Greek forces by Hecate and eventually ended up in Italy. She remained neutral in the conflict between Aeneas and Turnus until one of the Trojans killed Camilla, a fellow Hunter of Artemis. After that, Ali left the battlefield, disgusted at having to fight her own former allies, and spent the next few centuries roaming the Mediterranean before returning to what had become Rome. After Rome fell, Ali went east as the power of the gods waned in Europe. She returned to the west at the start of the Renaissance, but found herself stranded in Europe after the gods emigrated to North America until she found a way to fly across the ocean in the 1870s. As Artemis is a goddess of, among many other things, children, Ali has periodically worked as a babysitter/bodyguard for the children of rich and powerful demigods and others in the know, with her payment being donated as offerings to Artemis. Current, she’s on-call as the caretaker of Bunny Mistilteinn, daughter of Athena. Strengths:
- Unlike most children of Ares, Ali actually has a positive relationship with her divine father. While she’ll admit that the god of war has his faults, Ali maintains that he tries to do the right thing when it really counts. Ares, meanwhile, doesn’t push her nearly as hard as he does his other children for reasons that neither of them will discuss, and is on record as heartily approving of his daughter’s decision to “stay young and badass forever.”
- Over the course of her long career, there are very few immortals that Ali hasn’t met at least once. She has many friends among the ranks of the undying, and is rarely surprised by any sort of monster, since she’s seen all of them before.
- They say practice makes perfect, and Ali’s had a lot of time to practice. Any fighting art you can name, she’s already learned, incorporated with everything else she knows, and improved on. She’s witnessed firsthand the work of history’s greatest tacticians, and has been a silent participant in every major war in history. Added to her powers as a Hunter and a daughter of Ares… Unless you’re a god or something similar, do not fight her. Ever.
- Oh, and she’s great with kids.
Weaknesses:
- Ali has a longstanding feud with the god Poseidon. As a result, any sort of sea travel is dangerous for her, and she fears any sort of immersion in water, even something as small as taking a bath.
- Even among the Hunters, Ali finds herself isolated by her age. With very, very few notable exceptions, only gods and monsters have existed as long as she has, and not even all of those—Ali had already lived through twelve mortal generations before Heracles became a god. As a result, she often goes off on her own, leaving the main body of the Hunters for months or even years.
- Over the course of her long career, there are very few immortals that Ali hasn’t met at least once. That means that there are an awful lot of powerful, never-dying beings out there with grudges against her personally who would be thrilled to see her dead.
- Ali’s fatal flaw is Cynicism; she tends to believe the worst of people or situations from the outset and has difficulty trusting anyone or anything new.
Weapon: Ali wields the typical silver bow and knives of a Hunter of Artemis. Do you vow to be an Eternal Maiden?: Yes. Other: Ali is in fact a minor character from Greek mythology. Anyone who can tell me her real name before I reveal it myself gets a cookie. | |
